Subject: POCAR Time!
It's time to begin thinking about the Purdue Outing Club
Adventure Race. You may have already heard a lot about the
race but some issues may still be foggy. He's the main idea.
First of all, the race is scheduled for Martin Luther
King Jr. weekend, January 19-21, because there are no classes
on the following Monday, allowing recuperation time for
the participants!
The race will consist of numerous (depends on number of
participants) 5-person teams, chosen at random but based
on ability level 1-10 considering several factors, namely athletic
ability and orienteering skills.
The course length will be on the order of 50 miles with
checkpoints along the way to monitor each team's progress.
Considering such a demanding distance, the POCAR requires
teams
think strategically and logistically and exercise immense
teamwork
to successfully finish the race. The organizers of the POCAR
promise that the course will not be easy!
The location of the race will remain a mystery to all
participants until further notice (i.e. a day or two prior
to the
race) to ensure that teams do not have an unfair advantage
over
each other by researching the area ahead of time.
** Added by LG:
** Within 3 hours from Lafayette, which pretty much means
** in Southern Indiana. Ticketwise - fly in to
** Indianapolis or Louisville, KY.
Undoubtedly, this information has sparked your interest,
so
in response, a sign up sheet for those interested will be
available
as soon as Tuesday's meeting (November 6). And one further
note,
there will be a nominal race participation fee to ensure
that race
participants are serious about competing and to contribute
to final
prizes awarded to the most successful.
Last year's POCAR was a superb success and this year's
race
will surely match, if not exceed, last year's results.
More information will be available in the coming weeks.
However, if you have any questions contact myself or Bryan
during
the meetings. And for the rookie POCAR participants, feel
free to
ask any POCAR veteran about the ins and outs. POCAR is a
"can't
miss" event!!
